  • 2011 DeOFest

The following are some examples of individuals that have received assistance through Abilities Network’s Matt DeOrsey Emergency Seizure Medication Fund, which DeOFest supports.

“C” is three years old. His family moved to Maryland this year for his father's new job. Their health insurance wouldn't kick in for three months, and in the meantime his expensive epilepsy medications were a hardship for their family. DeOFest funds helped pay for “C”’s medication during the gap in coverage.

“E” is a woman with epilepsy living in Baltimore City. DeOFest funds covered her medication while an Abilities Network counselor worked with her to apply for medical assistance and prescription benefits.

Even with her prescription coverage, “L”'s necessary name-brand epilepsy medications cost her $500 per month. DeOFest funds gave her a much needed respite from those costs.

“A”'s family pays $800 a month for her epilepsy medication. DeOFest allowed them to use that money for other expenses.

“S” is an adult with epilepsy. He has been turned down for social security, and has struggled with getting Medical Assistance benefits. People with epilepsy need frequent blood tests to monitor the levels of medication in their system and make sure it is still at therapeutic levels. “S” had not been to the doctor in a long time, and his doctor did not want to write a new prescription without checking “S”'s blood work. “S” had no coverage to pay for the blood work. DeOFest funds paid for “S”'s epilepsy blood test so that his doctor would write him a new prescription and he could continue taking his medication.

Dear Abilities Network,
I am so grateful to you and the DeOFest Emergency Seizure Medication Fund, for not only letting me know about the last minute funds available for medications but what is more important is that you were so patient with the situation regarding the transfer of the prescription from Shoppers to Northern.  The 90-day supply of Dilantin (Phenytoin) will be invaluable to me as was your help.
Eternally Grateful,
anonymous

Dear Ms. ,
I wanted to let you know that I will not be applying for free Keppra
through the Abilities Network this coming year. I have gone on Medicare, and with Part D, I do not anticipate a need.  Thank you for granting me a 3-month supply last February 2011. It really helped me over a hump.
Regards, R
